Job Description

 About the Role

We are seeking an experienced and commercially driven leader to manage Friends Health & Fitness, a well-established and full service health and fitness centre that operates as a commercial enterprise of The Friends’ School.

This senior leadership position holds overall responsibility for the operational, financial and strategic success of Friends Health & Fitness. The Centre Manager will lead the development and implementation of the Centre’s Strategic Direction and operational plans, oversee day-to-day business operations, and foster a culture aligned with the ethos and values of The Friends’ School.

The role requires strong commercial acumen combined with relational leadership. The successful applicant will be an experienced manager of people and resources, committed to delivering outstanding customer experience, sustainable financial performance, and a safe and inclusive environment for all members of the community.

This is a permanent full-time position, commencing as soon as possible.

 

Key Focus Areas

  • Champion and uphold a strong child safe culture, ensuring compliance with safeguarding policies, mandatory reporting obligations, and the 10 National Child Safe Standards, while fostering an environment where concerns can be raised safely and confidently.
     
  • Provide proactive and collaborative leadership of Friends Health & Fitness, driving the implementation of strategic and operational plans, continuous improvement, and excellence in member experience.
     
  • Oversee all financial processes and strategies, including budgeting, reporting, revenue growth and cost control, ensuring long-term sustainability and accountability.
     
  • Lead, mentor and manage staff through effective recruitment, performance management, workforce planning and succession strategies, fostering a high-performing and values-aligned culture.
     
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with members, School leadership, faculty, tenants and community partners, ensuring effective collaboration and shared facility use.
     
  • Ensure compliance with relevant legislation, industry standards and regulatory requirements, including Workplace Health & Safety obligations.
     
  • Model and embed a collaborative management approach which is aligned with the Purpose & Concerns and values of The Friends’ School.

Essential Qualifications & Experience

  • Demonstrated experience in an equivalent senior leadership role in a business, or business unit.
     
  • Proven financial management experience, including budgeting, forecasting, and operational oversight.
     
  • Strong track record in staff management, organisational leadership, change management, and fostering a positive and inclusive workplace culture.
     
  • Demonstrated ability to work safely within a fitness centre and to meet the inherent physical requirements of the role.
     
  • Current Tasmanian Working with Vulnerable People Registration (Employment category) and a National Police Check issued within the past six months.
     
  • Current First Aid and CPR certification (or willingness to obtain).
     
  • Pool Rescue Award (or willingness to obtain).
     
  • Sound knowledge of the National Quality Framework, including the National Quality Standard, relevant regulations, legislation, and approved learning frameworks.
     
  • Demonstrated commitment to the Purpose & Concerns and ethos of The Friends’ School, including cultural leadership aligned with the School’s values.
  • Relevant business qualifications and certifications, and/or substantial experience within the fitness or aquatic industries is highly desirable.
