Job Description

About the Role

The Friends’ School is seeking a skilled and dedicated Head of Sailing to lead and manage our sailing program. This ongoing, part-year position (20% FTE) covers Term 1 and Term 4 and plays a vital role in upholding the strong tradition and culture of sailing at Friends’.

The role involves overseeing sailing activities, supervising coaching staff, managing logistics for training and competitions, and ensuring the wellbeing and safety of all student participants. Working closely with the Head of Secondary Sport, coaching team, and parents, the Head of Sailing will ensure a cohesive, safe, and engaging program that reflects the School’s values.


Key Focus Areas

  • Direct and manage all aspects of Friends’ Sailing, including training, competitions, and events.
  • Promote a child-safe environment by leading safeguarding practices and ensuring compliance with policy.
  • Supervise casual sailing coaches and oversee the contract services of the Head Sailing Coach.
  • Prepare risk assessments, safety plans, and the Friends’ Sailing Handbook.
  • Manage logistics for local, national, and international sailing events, including travel and student care.
  • Coordinate communication with parents, students, and staff, including appointing and supporting parent managers.
  • Oversee sailing uniforms, equipment, and scheduling of events.
  • Represent Friends’ Sailing as a positive and inclusive program within the School community.

Essential Qualification

  • Relevant experience in sailing and in managing sports or leisure programs.
  • Understanding and experience of the 10 National Child Safe Standards.
  • Current Tasmanian Driver’s Licence and First Aid qualification (or ability to obtain).
  • Strong interpersonal skills for working with parents, staff, and students.
  • Critical thinking skills to make sound decisions in dynamic outdoor environments.
  • Commitment to child safety and alignment with the ethos and values of The Friends’ School.
