Job Description

About the Role

The Friends’ School is seeking an experienced and committed Director of Residence to lead Walker House, our co-educational boarding residence. Reporting to the Deputy Principal and Principal, the Director of Residence is responsible for the overall welfare, safety, and development of students in residence, as well as the management and leadership of residence staff.

Walker House accommodates 45 international and domestic students and includes a flat for the Director and their family, alongside a Live-in Residence Supervisor. The role requires a proactive, hands-on leader who fosters a supportive, child-safe environment and embodies the School’s Quaker values and Purpose & Concerns.

 

Key Focus Areas

  • Reside in Walker House and act as the emergency on-call contact during term time and weekends, ensuring student safety and wellbeing.
  • Promote and maintain a child-safe environment, ensuring compliance with mandatory reporting policies and the National Child Safe Standards.
  • Oversee the academic, social, and personal development of students, supporting integration, discipline, and pastoral care.
  • Lead, manage, and mentor residence staff, including rostering, induction, professional development, and performance management.
  • Coordinate residence procedures including routines, study programs, leave requests, co-curricular participation, and special events.
  • Manage residence administration, including budgets, student transportation, catering, maintenance, and communication with parents and stakeholders.
  • Ensure compliance with Australian Standards for Boarding and maintain connections with relevant state and national boarding networks.
  • Represent Walker House in marketing, recruitment, tours, and interviews for prospective boarders and families.

Essential Qualifications & Attributes

  • Current Tasmanian Working with Vulnerable People registration (employment), National Police Check (less than 6 months old), and COVID-19 vaccination.
  • Current driver’s licence (manual preferred) and willingness to undertake required training, including ABSA courses, First Aid, and Youth Mental Health First Aid.
  • Proven experience in leadership or senior management within a school or residential environment, with strong administrative and organisational skills.
  • Experience in boarding or residential care, including pastoral care of adolescents.
  • Understanding of and experience with the 10 National Child Safe Standards.
  • Eligibility to be registered with the Tasmanian Teachers Registration Board; secondary teaching experience desirable.
  • Demonstrated resilience, professionalism, and the ability to work in a demanding role, including outside standard hours.
